The Best Time to Snorkel with Turtles on Oahu

The best time to snorkel with turtles on Oahu: winter surf on the North Shore, summer swell on the South Shore, water temperature by month, nesting season.

Updated November 2026

Any month works for a turtle snorkel on Oahu; what changes through the year is which shore is calm. From about November into March the big winter surf hits the North Shore, where Laniakea is a beach to watch turtles from rather than swim off. Summer is the swell season on the South Shore, where Waikiki’s Turtle Canyon boats and Hanauma Bay are, though its largest surf is about 10 to 15 feet against more than 25 feet on the North Shore in winter. The sea off Honolulu is warmest in late summer and early autumn, about 82 °F in September, and coolest in February, about 77 °F. Pick a calm day on the side of the island the surf is not hitting.

So in winter the North Shore’s turtles are a sight from the sand. Whatever the month, check the surf forecast for the shore you are heading to before you book a shore snorkel.

NOAA’s monthly means for its Honolulu station (Coastal Water Temperature Guide, checked November 2026). There is no NOAA station on the North Shore or the west side.

If you feel the cold, a wetsuit helps in the cooler months: Dive Oahu's two-reef snorkel includes one, from $139 (checked November 2026), and Dolphin Excursions Hawaii rents them on board.

Time of day

  • Hanauma Bay lets visitors in from 6:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Wednesday to Sunday, and clears the beach at 3:30 p.m.
  • Laniakea’s volunteers are on the beach from 10 a.m. to sunset.
  • The Turtle Canyon boats run several departures a day; the times are on each listing’s calendar.

The nesting season

NOAA gives the Hawaiian green turtle’s nesting and hatching season as May to December. Most Hawaiian green turtles nest far to the northwest, at Lalo (French Frigate Shoals), and only a few on Oahu’s beaches. If you find a turtle digging on a beach, or hatchlings, keep away, keep lights off it and call NOAA’s hotline on (888) 256-9840.

The safety numbers

Snorkeling is the activity most often involved in ocean drownings in Hawaii: 206 of 712 ocean drownings from 2009 to 2018, according to Hawaii’s health department, and 91% of the snorkelers who died were visitors, with an average age of 59. Heart disease was a contributing cause in 35.6% of all ocean drowning victims. So: snorkel with a guide or at a lifeguarded beach, never alone, wear the flotation the boat offers, and ask about the conditions before you go in.
